Sexual health diaries

Sexual health research usually relies on participants honestly and accurately reporting their sexual behaviour. However, it is easy to forget details of behaviour over long periods of time. Diary methodology is useful for collecting sexual behaviour information as it allows regular reporting (ie: weekly or daily). Diaries are traditionally collected on paper, but researchers have found that people might not complete their diary entries on time.

We have trialled diary collection using paper, online web entry and mobile phone SMS, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of these methodologies for collecting sexual behaviour information, as well as participants' opinions of the three modes.

Data collection was completed in September 2008 and a summary of results is now available. Results from this study will inform sexual health research and improve the way we collect data which is vital for understanding sexual health and monitoring sexual health interventions.
